COYOTE
The coyote hunts on open prairies and fields. Its food consists mainly of small mammals, but it also eats insects, fruits and berries. The coyote is gray and has a drooping, bushy tail and a pointed nose. The wily coyote is also South Dakota`s state animal.
MOUNTAIN GOAT
The mountain goat is actually a mountain antelope and not a true a goat. The all-white animal grows a dense wool undercoat and a long outer coat of hair. Both sexes have sharp, slender black horns.
CLARK`S NUTCRACKER
Locally common in conifers near timberline, where it nests. Flashy white wing and tail patches and the even gray body suggest a stub-tailed Mockingbird, but Mockingbirds are not found at high elewations. Long sharply pointed bill and white face confirm the identification at a distance.
BUFFALO
The bison, in fact, is the official logo of Custer State Park, and its main claim to fame as a world class wildlife refuge. It has nearly 1600 buffalo; one of the largest herds anywhere.

PRAIRIE DOG
The black-tailed prairie dog is found on the dry, upland prairie. It is a rodent that lives in large social groups called towns. The round mound of dirt that surrounds the prairie dog hole keeps rain water from running into the burrow and serves as an observation post to watch for danger. Prairie dogs get their name from their bark-like call.
